At the time of the 1900 census, Luther was a farmer in Burnet County, Texas. In 1910 he was keeper of a livery stable in Marble Falls, Burnet County, Texas. A boarder Robert T. Whitehead was listed with the family. At the time of the 1930 census, Luther was living without his family in Yucaipa, San Bernardino County, California and working as a farm laborer. He rented his room for $5 a month. He was shown as married.

Luther married Gertrude Anna Ryan, daughter of Robert Horton Ryan and Gertrude Anna Casparis. (Gertrude Anna Ryan was born on 2 Mar 1873 in Washington, D.C.,² died on 26 Mar 1960 in Marble Falls, Burnet County, Texas and was buried in Sunnyside Mausoleum, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California.). The cause of her death was diabetic acidosis.
