Iris Phillips Lewis, 99, of Burnet, passed away, Nov. 25, 2010 at Oaks Nursing Center surrounded by family and friends.
She was born to the late Ealy D. and Willie (Crane) Phillips on Dec. 5, 1910 in Spicewood. Iris attended school in Spicewood and graduated Salutatorian from Marble Falls High School in 1928. She attended Carter Business College in San Angelo and was later employed by an insurance company in San Angelo and Houston. She married her long time high school sweetheart, A.W. (Weldon) Lewis in 1930. They had a long, happy, and devoted life together for 73 years. After living in San Antonio, Mathis, Falfurrias, Stephenville, and Spicewood, they moved to Burnet in 1954.
Iris was an active member of Vanderveer St. Church of Christ, she was a faithful Christian and Bible class teacher for over 70 years. She was also a member of the Burnet Home Demonstration Club. She enjoyed many years of traveling with her husband and she loved entertaining people in her home. She enjoyed life to the fullest, her motto being "live long, love much, laugh often." Iris is preceded in death by her husband, Weldon Lewis; her father and mother; one brother, M.R. Phillips, and two sisters, Ima Lee Kuykendall and Nella Mae Dodgen.
Iris is survived by one son, Weldon F. Lewis and wife, Joyce, of Fulshear, Texas. She is survived by two grandchildren, Mary Beth Carter and husband, Roy Lee, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Jack Lewis and wife, Julie, of Chicago. She is survived by three great-grandchildren, Price Carter, Blythe Carter, and Nathaniel Weldon Lewis. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who have been her pride and joy. The family thanks Oaks Nursing Center, where Iris made her home for the past five years.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at Edgar Funeral Home in Burnet with Jerry Don Sanders and Bill Phillips officiating. Interment followed at the Smithwick Cemetery.
Iris married Arthur Weldon Lewis, son of Arthur Monroe Lewis and Essie Marie Faubion. (Arthur Weldon Lewis was born on 23 Apr 1908, died on 9 Jul 2003 and was buried in Smithwick Cemetery, Smithwick, Burnet County, Texas.)
