Bobbie Jean Soules

Bobbie Jean McCasland Soules of Goldthwaite, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 15, 2020 in Longview, Texas after a five year battle with Alzheimer's. She was 92 years of age.
Bobbie was born on Dec. 14, 1927 at McGirk, Texas to Samuel Martin McCasland and Stella Venable McCasland. In her early years, she attended McGirk schools and graduated in 1945 from Star High School in Star, Texas. She was VicePresident of her senior class and voted Best AllAround Athlete that year. After graduation she married her high school sweetheart, Ward Glyn Soules on August 10, 1945. Two children were born to this union, daughter Glynda Jean in January 1947 and son Sammy (Sam) in June 1949.
Leaving the Goldthwaite area in 1947, Bobbie and Ward followed the oil patch around West Texas living in towns such as Kermit, Sheffield, Plains, and Andrews, followed by 14 years in Odessa. A promotion for Ward took them to the oilfields of Casper, Wyoming in 1969. No matter where Ward asked Bobbie to set up housekeeping, she was active in her church, her children's activities, and support of her husband. Their move to Casper afforded more time for her athletic talents as well as many more talents yet to bloom. She took up golf after the move and became the Senior Ladies Champion Golfer for the State of Wyoming in 1980. She also became an individual and league champion bowler. Her artistic talent surfaced in her quilting, stained glass, papiermache Santas, oil painting, water colors, and tole painting. She also started Bob bie's Paintin' Parlor where she gave painting & craft lessons to the ladies of Casper during the long winter months.
After retirement, they moved to McCasland family land in Mills County on Gholson Creek that was purchased in the 1890's by her grandfather. There they built their home and cultivated championship pecans. Bobbie's talent for flower gardening & arranging also became evident. As an active member of the Goldthwaite Garden Club she held several officer positions and was awarded her Master Gardner Certification. She consistently won best of class or best of show ribbons at the Garden Club's annual flower shows and volunteered many years helping build the Garden Club's Christmas parade floats for good measure.
Bobbie was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church of Goldthwaite as well as a long time participant in the church choir and member/secretary of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She consistently volunteered for UMW and Fidelis civic programs. She rarely missed being a regular blood donor and routinely stepped forward to transport anyone in need of help getting to doctor's appointments, etc. Into her eighties, she would take an "old person" to the doctor, when in fact many would be several years younger than her. Also at most family gatherings or church functions attendees were happy to see her chocolate and coconut pies, fresh cinnamon bread and sugar cookies. Her killer apricot fried pies were the favorite of her grandchildren.
Mom was an amazing, multitalented role model with high expectations for herself, her children, her grandkids, and fellow volunteers. She was fearless, led by example, tackled any task headon, expected all to pay attention, and do it right the first time. If there were an eleventh Commandment, her suggestion would be "Thou Shalt Not Whine". After the death of her husband, Bobbie continued to ably manage the family ranch for the next 26 years, rarely asking for help, but continuing to help others and serving her Lord.
Bobbie's battle with Alzheimer's was diagnosed in late 2015 after she moved to Longview at the request of her son. A special thanks is extended to the compassionate, caring staff of Heartis Memory Care in Longview where she was a resident the last three years and to Stacy and Aleshia of Heart to Heart Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, fatherinlaw and motherin law, Fred and Flossie Soules, soninlaw Larry Gorrell, siblings Wilma Newton, Ruby Dell Harper, Sammie McConnell, Homer McCasland, Harmon McCasland, and Otha Geeslin, nephews, Gary McConnell and Steven Decker.
Survivors include her daughter Glynda Jean Gorrell, San Angelo, her son Sam (Brenda), Longview, five grandchildren: Jay Soules (Andrea) of Allen, Stacy Johnson (Rick) of San Angelo, Mac Soules (Robyn) of Longview, Summer Clements (Jarrod) of San Angelo, and Ben Gorrell (Kyleigh) of Odessa, sisterinlaw Freda Soules Decker (Odessa), nine great grandchildren, and many nieces & nephews.
Pall bearers are Jay Soules, Mac Soules, Luke Soules, Ben Gorrell, Rick Johnson, & Jarrod Clements. Honorary Pall Bearers are Blake Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Tucker Soules and Reed Soules.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, the American Cancer Society, or First United Methodist Church of Goldthwaite in Bobbie's honor.
Graveside service and interment will be at Hurst Ranch Cemetery, Star, Texas officiated by Pastor John Alsbrooks, First United Methodist Church, beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday March 21, 2020. All who wish to attend the graveside are welcome.
