Jepha Benson Head was a business man. For a time he was in the mercantile business in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. From the Cleburne Chronicle of 1879 is this ad: "Shoes: J.B. Head, proprieter, Latest Fashions." He was listed in the 1880 and 1900 census as a saloon keeper in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. His birth date was given as Nov 1852 in 1900 census. His parents birthplace was given as Alabama. He was listed in the 1910 census as a druggist in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. His death certificate showed his occupation as retired merchant.

Oral history provided by Lawrence Head was that Jeptha moved to Fort Worth when prohibition came to operate a saloon there. The druggist occupation may have been a cover. His family, who were strict, non drinking Methodists were very disappointed in his life and choice of occupation. Consequently they had little to do with him. There were few records. ⁶

Dep married Alice Davis, daughter of Dr Nathaniel Davis and Sarah Bounds, about 1879. (Alice Davis was born on 13 Sep 1862 in Fulton, Itawamba County, Mississippi,¹⁰ died on 19 Nov 1949 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas ¹⁰ and was buried on 22 Nov 1949 in Sunset Memorial Park, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas ¹⁰.). The cause of her death was heart disease coronary sclerosis, myocardial failure, severe bronchial asthma, chronic cholecystitis and cholelithosis.⁸
