At the time of the 1920 census, she was working as a public school teacher. The 1940 census showed that she had completed 4 years of high school.

The Rifle Telegram - November 10, 1949

Funeral were held this afternoon at 3:30 O'clock at the Christian church for Mrs. Herbert Brosius, who died Monday morning at 9 o'clock (Nov 7, 1949) at Mercy Hospital in Denver, after a long illness. Rev. James W. Arnold officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, with Sayer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harry Harp of Meeker and Mrs. R. O. Smith sang, accompanied by Mrs. Otto B. Duckworth at the organ.

Clara Margaret George was born February 15, 1894 on Rifle Creek. She attended schools but was graduated from high school at Victor. She was united in marriage to John Herbert Brosius June 16, 1920. To this union three children were born, one of whom Ellery, was killed in service in 1945 while piloting a P-38 in the South Pacific.

Mrs. Brosius taught school on Rifle Creek for 5 years and served one year as emergency teacher during the war. She was past president of the American Legion Aux., the Farmers Union and the Rifle Creek Extension Club.

Mrs. Brosius is survived by her husband and two children, Mrs. Mary Margaret Head of Odessa, Tex., and Willard Brosius of Rifle; brothers Claude, Harry and Jasper George all of Rifle, and three grandchildren. Her parents Alfred and Clara George preceded her in death.

She graduated from teachers normal at Victor, CO and lived with McCambles while there. She also taught school at Dry Hollow and at Carbondale. 9

  Medical Notes:

Her son Willard Brosius wrote in his journal: "The hospital said she had a blood clot the size of a robins egg in her heart that lodged just so as to kill her--- today they would have dissolved that so easy as to be merely routine."

Clara married John Herbert Brosius, son of John Ellery Brosius and Mary Lovena Thomas, on 15 Jun 1920 in Rifle, Garfield County, Colorado.1 (John Herbert Brosius was born on 28 Jun 1892 in Aspen, Pitkin County, Colorado,11 15 died on 7 Jan 1974 in Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado 11 16 17 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rifle, Garfield County, Colorado 8 18.)


  Marriage Notes:



The marriage was performed by H. Ralph Bixel of Rifle, Colorado. The witnesses signing the marriage license were Anis Turner and Jasper George. Fanny Anis Turner was Clara's one-half first cousin. Jasper was her brother.
