11 Jul 1944 from the Goldthwaite Eagle:
"Word has been received that T-Sgt R. L. Atchison was wounded in the leg somewhere in Italy, about three weeks ago. He is in a hospital, but it is thought his injuries are not serious."

During World War II Sgt. Atchison served bravely earning two bronze stars and a purple heart with a gold leaf cluster.

Gatesville, Texas, Friday, August 4, 1944 News of our men and women in uniform

Pfc. Allen S. Griffin whose home is on Rt. 2, Gatesville and T/Sgt. Raymond L. Atchison who lives at Pidcoke have been awarded combat decorations for fighting in Italy, according to a release received from Hdqs., 5th Army, PRO Section, and the citation reads: "have been cited by their regiments of the 36th "Texas" Infantry Division and awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for actual participation in combat with the enemy while serving on the Fifth Army front in Italy."

"Standards for the badge are high. the decoration, which was recently authorized by the War Department is awarded to the Infantry soldier who has proven his fighting ability in combat and consists of a silver rifle set against a background of infantry blue, enclosed in a silver wreath"
