At the time of the 1885 Iowa state census, the family was living in Jackson, Montgomery County, Iowa. Samuel's father Peter M. Moritz, 63 born in Pennsylvania, was part of his household.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Samuel M Moritz, aged nearly 36 years, son of Peter Moritz, deceased. He leaves to the care of the wife, five sons, the oldest aged 10 years, the youngest 3. "Mott", as he was familiarly known, was taken sick the same night with his father and in the same manner, and never saw him afterwards, tho' both were in the same house. The funeral, on Monday afternoon was largely attended by sympathizing friends and neighbors. "Mott" was an energetic, prosperous, good-hearted man, whom everybody liked,
