Murry's parents were John Morton Burnham and Caroline Pauline Mezger. At the time of the 1930 census, the family lived in Burnet County on the Spicewood to Marble Falls road. His father farmed. His siblings were Winston and Kathlyn.

Murry was a great outdoorsman and pioneer in predator hunting. It was Murry's father, Morton, who first discovered the predator call. After the turn of the century, he witnessed a pair of coyotes bearing down on a squealing jackrabbit caught in a wire fence.

Morton wondered if a homemade call would attract predators. He made a call, it worked, and he made some for friends, then went on to sell them. Later, Murry and his brother Winston started a booming business selling the calls out of their store in Marble Falls, Texas. They started a catalog business as well. Some years later, the business was sold to Gary Roberson, based in Menard, Texas.

Murry married Jolene Wall, daughter of Ollie Norwood Wall and Vedena Marie Carpenter, on 31 Mar 1957 in , Burnet County, Texas.¹ (Jolene Wall was born on 2 Oct 1938 in , Burnet County, Texas ⁵ and died on 17 Apr 2022.)
