John's parents were Ben B. Brown and Lena Prothro (according to the death certificate). When John registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was a locomotive fireman for Gulf C & S S Railway in Silsbee, Hardin County, Texas. He had a wife and child and claimed an exemption for their support. At the time of the 1920 census, John was a brakeman for the railroad. He rented part of the same house his wife's family lived in in Longview, Gregg County, Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, John was a railway conductor. He rented his home in Mineola, Wood County, Texas, for $30 a month.
