Tombstone inscription: A father and mother to orphans. Shep had no children of his own. At the time of the 1860 census, he was married to Martha, a widow with 4 children that he raised. He was farming in Johnson County, Texas, (post office Buchanan). He had real estate valued at $480 and personal assets of $612. A laborer, Samuel McClain, was listed with the family.

At the time of the 1870 census, Shep was farming in Johnson County, Texas. He was listed with his wife Sarah Ann and the 4 Liles children. All 3 boys were farming with him. He had real estate valued at $500 and personal assets of $500. At the time of the 1880 census, he and Sarah only had a boarder, John Sanders, listed in the household. He was still farming in Johnson County, Texas. The record shows that his parents were born in Georgia. The 1900 record shows their birth place as Tennessee. His household in 1900 consisted of his wife, step granddaughters Mattie and Bertha, and Mattie's husband Jesse Monroe Head.
