At the time of the 1900 census, he was a farmer in Hoods, Blount County, Alabama. He rented his farm. at the time of the 1910 census, Johnny was still farming in Hoods. The four older children worked on the farm also. He was paying a mortgage to own his farm. Johnny was farming in Hoods in 1920 also. Five of the children worked on the farm with him. He was paying a mortgage. At the time of the 1930 census, Johnny was farming in Jefferson County, Alabama. He rented his farm house. A granddaughter, Vondie M. Hales, was part of his household.
