Thomas's father, Samuel Craig, was born in Indiana, his mother, Hellen B. Higeon, in Ohio.

At the time of the 1900 census, he rented his home in Troy, Monroe County, Iowa. He was a bank clerk. His mother in law's, Elizabeth Noble, was listed in his household. At the time of the 1910 census, he was a teller for National Bank in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa. Two lodgers were listed with his family. Eva Fisher, 22 born in Iowa, and Elsie Noble, 24 born in Iowa. Both were public school teachers.

In 1920, he was listed on the census as a bookkeeper for Albia Coal Company. He owned his home in Albia. A hired girl, Emma Lewis 25 born in Iowa of immigrants from England, was listed in the household as a cook. Thomas indicated on the 1925 Iowa census that he owned his home free of mortgage and that it was worth $4000. At the time of the 1930 census, Thomas was a bookkeeper for a bank. He owned his home in Troy, Monroe County, Iowa. It was valued at $5000.
