An accident Sunday that killed 37-year-old Miguel Licea, of Comanche, also injured his daughter, 15-year-old Heather Licea, who is a student at Comanche High School.
The two were riding a 2005 Yamaha motorcycle southbound on US Hwy. 377 towards Dublin at approximately 5:30 p.m. when a 1996 Chevy pickup traveling eastbound on County Road 379 failed to yield to the right of way at the stop sign and turned in front of the motorcycle. Miguel was unable to avoid the pickup and crashed into the driver's side of the vehicle.
According to various reports, Miguel only had one helmet and insisted Heather wear it. The helmet probably saved the girl's life. A DPS accident report states Miguel was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Bart Greenway at 7:20 p.m. Reports indicate he suffered significant head injuries.
Heather was airlifted to Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth with serious internal injuries. She was reportedly listed in stable but critical condition Tuesday morning. Her family, who witnesses say were in a car following the motorcycle at the time of the crash, are with her as well as school officials including Comanche High School principal Scott Carlisle.
The community is planning a fundraiser to help the family with medical costs.
