They were listed next to the family of John and Catharine Ash. John was 2 year older than him. At the time of the 1870 census, Jacob was an engineer on a steam boat. They were listed in Green Bay, Lee County, Iowa, (again a few houses away from John Ash.) Jacob had real estate valued at $2400 and personal assets of $430. At the time of the 1880 census, Jacob was a farmer in Green Bay.
