His parents were born in Scotland. They were living in Arkansas in 1890. At the time of the 1900 census, John was a night watchman in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa. He rented his home. At the time of the 1910 census, John was a laborer for a lumber company. He owned his home in Whitman County, Washington, free of mortgage. At the time of the 1920 census, John was widowed and lodging with Louis and Josephine Rohleder in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County, California. He was a general laborer.

John married Laura May Noble, daughter of Christian Emigh Noble and Zilphia K. Reese, on 18 Feb 1885. (Laura May Noble was born in May 1855 in Iowa ² and died before 1920.)
