Harvey Kelley Obituary
Harvey Kelley February 7, 1929 – October 13, 2011
Harvey Clare Kelley, age 82, died after a long illness at 10:20 p.m. October 13, 2011 at the Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, Colorado. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anis, and their two children, Andy William (Judy Vanderlest) Kelley, and Rose Anne (Stephan) Schweissing, and two grandsons, Kelley Tyler Schweissing and Ethan James Schweissing, all of Grand Junction. He was born February 7, 1929 near Molina, Colorado, to Clare W. Kelley and Lavida Bell (Wallace) Kelley. He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister, Doris Marie. Harvey was a life-long resident of Plateau Valley with the exception of one year spent in Glenwood Springs where he and his wife operated a juke box route. He married Vivian Anis Griffith January 1, 1950, at the home of his parents on the Peninsula. He grew up on their the ranch five miles of Collbran and graduated from Collbran Union High School in 1947. He ranched in partnership with his parents until 1956 when they sold the ranch in 1956. Then he and his wife moved to Glenwood Springs for one year. After his father died, October 20, 1957, he returned to the valley and rode for the Buzzard Creek Pool and worked for Collbran Supply before buying the Hattie Long ranch on Kansas Mesa in1960. He and his family lived there for 17 years. He and his wife bought a place near Fruita and one in Missouri and made plans to buy feeder cattle in Missouri and summer them on their forest permit in the summer. About that time the price of fuel rose and the scabies dipping requirement made them change their mind about the project, so they bought the place on Kansas Mesa where he lived until he died. He loved his cows and was instrumental in getting loading corrals built at Valley Ranch to help facilitate shipping livestock. He had been a member of the Collbran IOOF Lodge and Plateau Valley Stockgrowers. Memorial services will by held at the Kelley Camp 25 miles East of Collbran on May 27, 2012. Memorial contributions may be made to Plateau Valley Hospice, P.O. Box 294, Collbran, CO, 81624 or Collbran Fire and Ambulance, P.O. Box 456, Collbran, CO 81624.
