His birth date was given as Mar 1876 in the 1900 census, age 23. It was given as 32 in 1910, 42 in 1920, and 52 in 1930. He also reported on the 1930 census that he was 20 when first married. (He and Lena were married one year in 1900.) So something was reported wrong. The death certificate had his birth date as 18 Mar 1877.

At the time of the 1900 census, Richard and Lena were listed with her parents in Bastrop County, Texas. He was a farm laborer. He gave his parents' birthplace as Germany. They were living on their own at the time of the 1910 census. Richard was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Bastrop County, Texas. It was listed as a general farm.

By the time of the 1920 census, Richard had remarried. Louise age 27 was listed in 1920, Annie age 38 in 1930. His son Richard gave his "mother's" name as Annie Miller, nearest relative, when he registered for the WWI draft in 1918, so this was probably the same person married to Richard. (The obituary of Joseph E. Miller, born 11 Jan 1931-died 21 Mar 2008, gave his parents as Paul Richard Miller and Annie Mary Matula. Rockdale Reporter, 28 Mar 2008.) There were 3 new children by 1920 and another 4 by 1930. Richard owned his home free of mortgage in Bastrop County, Texas, and continued to farm there through 1930. Rich married Lena Bunte, daughter of August Bunte Sr and Meta Garlipp, about 1899. (Lena Bunte was born on 10 Oct 1882 in Texas,^{5 9} died on 20 Mar 1912 in , Bastrop County, Texas ¹⁰ and was buried in Bunte Cemetery, Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas.). The cause of her death was peritonitis.⁷

Rich next married Annie Mary Matula, daughter of Luddick Matula and Emila Kubicek, about 1913. (Annie Mary Matula was born on 26 Jul 1893 in Praha, Fayette County, Texas,¹¹ died on 8 Mar 1973 in Bastrop, Bastrop County, Texas ¹¹ and was buried on 10 Mar 1973 in Oak Hill Cemetery, Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas ¹¹.). The cause of her death was respiratory failure due to arteroscleratic heart disease.⁷
