At the time of the 1900 census, James was farming a rented farm in Benton County, Mississippi. His widowed mother was living with him. She continued to live with him after he married. He was listed in the 1910 census with a wife and two children. When James registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was a rural mail carrier and a farmer in Ashland, Benton County, Mississippi. His wife, Mattie, was his nearest relative. At the time of the 1920 census, James was working as a RFD mail carrier. He was paying a mortgage to own his home in Ashland, Benton County, Mississippi. He had 5 children by that time.

James married Martha Carolina Hudspeth, daughter of William Hudspeth and Almarinda Morton Gresham, on 1 Jul 1906 in , Benton County, Mississippi. (Martha Carolina Hudspeth was born on 3 Jan 1877 in Mississippi and died on 21 Jan 1971.)
