Came to America with his parents when he was seven years old. Fought in the battle of King's Mountain with the Revolutionary Army.

Hugh W Stephenson was a farmer, five feet nine inches tall; his weight was 155 lbs; blue eyes; hair was light or whitish, his beard was sandy, his complexion for florid; his skin was thin; he had even tempered, mild disposition, he was very domestic and industrious, he was kind and gentle in his manner, and he was a very affectionate and thoughtful husband. He was a consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Rock Springs, Lawrence County, Alabama.

Hugh was listed on the 1820 Alabama State Census in Franklin County with 3 sons under 21, his wife and another female over 21, and 1 daughter under 21. At the time of the 1830 census, Hugh was head of household with his wife and a son between 15 and 19 in Lawrence County, Alabama. He served in 1837 as representative to the Alabama State Legislature from Lawrence County, Alabama.
