At the time of the 1860 and 1870 census, the family farmed in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi.
By the time of the 1880 census, John's family had moved to Texas. His wife Anna died soon after their arrival. John and their two children lived in Johnson County, Texas, where he was a tenant. John remarried on 19 Aug 1880 in Ellis County, Texas, to Mary Anna McClain. By the time of the 1900 census, he had 4 more children, Texas Anna (born Oct 1882), Joseph Thomas (born 6 May 1884), Daniel McClain (born 9 Dec 1885)., and Osa Myrtle (born Feb 1887). He was renting the farm he worked in Foard County, Texas. In the 1910 census, John indicated that he was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Wilbarger County, Texas. I. L. Julian of Lawton, Oklahoma was the informant on his death certificate. 10
