Durward Lee, a longtime resident of Merced, died on February 12, 2014, at the age of 88. He was born November 4, 1925, in Yuma, Arizona.
Durward served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 until his retirement in 1964. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued to work for the government in the Civil Service as the Base Engine Manager at Castle Air Force Base until 1981.
As an avid supporter of Merced Blue Devil Athletics, Durward could be found at the college on a daily basis attending a football, baseball, basketball, softball, or volleyball game. He was proud to sit on the bench among the staff and coaches and interact with the players. He volunteered in the training room, on the field, and at fundraisers for the teams. Durward also served as a Sheriff Community Volunteer.
Durward is survived by his wife, Christel; his son, Steve; his daughter, Lori; a sister, Eva Howard; and a brother, Bradley (Forrest) Lee.
A viewing will take place Saturday, February 22, at 10:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located at 5554 North Winton Way, Atwater, California. Following the viewing, a memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Burial service is scheduled at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery located at 32053 West McCabe Road in Santa Nella, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Merced County Rescue Mission, 1921 Canal Street, Merced, California 95340, the B Street Shelter, Merced, California 95341 Shelter, or to a charity of your choice.
