Ray Arbuckle, Jr., age 78, husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away Monday, December 17, 2007. He was born October 18, 1929 in Elgin Texas, the only child of Florence Erhard and Ray H. Arbuckle Sr. Ray graduated from Elgin High School in 1947 Salutatorian of his class. He attended Southwestern University in Georgetown where he majored in business and was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

He began his banking career at the Elgin National Bank in 1951 after graduating from Southwestern. In addition to his banking responsibilities, he was co- owner of Rivers and Arbuckle Insurance Agency. In 1974 he became president of the newly established Elgin Savings and Loan Association, which later became Remington Savings. He led in the restoration of the Historic Nofsinger Home that served as the home office of Remington Savings.

Ray lived a very active life in the community. He was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, a fifty year member of the Elgin Kiwanis Club, fifty year member of First United Methodist Church and past president of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber honored him as Elgin's Most Worthy Citizen in 1980 and in 1982 was named Conservation Farmer of the year. He served in the Texas National Guard for 11 years. He enjoyed ranching, hunting and cooking for friends and family. Ray was a daily participant of "The Downtown Coffee Club".

On April 14, 1955, Ray and the former LaVerne Kylberg were married at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elgin. They made their home in Elgin where they raised their two children Sheryl and Russell. Ray is survived by LaVerne his wife of 52 years, his daughter Sheryl Lynn and husband Terry Green of Taylor; his son Russell Ray and wife, Paula Arbuckle of Elgin. He is also survived by his five grandsons Cayton and Ryan Green, Trent, Ethan and Jake Arbuckle.

Honoring Ray as pall bearers will be Bradley Cardwell, Blair Hicks, Jim Meredith, Bruce Staton, Stephen Kylberg, Danny Lewis, and Francisco Vizcarra. Honorary pallbearers will be The Downtown Coffee Club. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Hospice Austin or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. at Elgin Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at St Peter's Lutheran Church Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor J. W. Meilke officiating. Interment will be held immediately following at the Elgin Cemetery.
