SAN ANGELO, Texas - Marlene Joan Brown Evans, 64, died peacefully in the presence of her family on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006.
She was born on June 10, 1942, in Fort Madison, the daughter of LaVerne and Betty Summers Brown.
After moving to San Angelo, Texas, she met and married Roy G. Evans on June 2, 1972. While in San Angelo, she was an employment counselor with Snelling & Snelling prior to becoming a commercial real estate agent.
In 1976, she and her family moved to Sonora, Texas, where her husband was employed with the Sonora Independent School District as a teacher and coach. She was very active in community service. She served as a board member for the American Cancer Society, Property Appraisal Board and was a founding member of the support committee of the Sonora Senior Center. She was instrumental in implementing Sonora's first emergency response system for the elderly. She was very involved with United Blood Services and a dedicated blood donor. She received the Meritorious Service Award from the American Heart Association.
She was a life member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, in which she helped raise more than $1 million for St. Jude's Children's Hospital in 1979, and was state-acknowledged as a “Member of Excellence." She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and served as past worthy matron for the Sonora-Eldorado Chapter 575 in 1988-89. She won multiple state vocal awards in Iowa and greatly enjoyed singing at weddings and funerals in Iowa and Texas. In support of her daughters, she was actively involved in Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, and school activities and athletics.
She and her husband moved to Miles, Texas, in 1997, and then to Ballinger, Texas, in 2001.
Survivors include: her husband, Roy G. Evans; her three daughters and their families, Tonya and Phillip Hancock and children, Nathan, Casey, Jessica and Ashley of Midland, Texas; Leah and Ricky Peacock and children Whitney and Kelsi of Nazareth, Texas; and Dana and Jeff Keepers and their daughter Dakota of Omaha, Neb.; her mother, Betty Brown of Keokuk; siblings, Joyce Tweedy of Argyle, Nancy Seabold of Wazata, Minn., and Richard Brown of Windom, Minn.; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and many dearly loved friends.
Her father, LaVerne Brown of Keokuk, preceded her in death.
Services were held Monday, Oct. 9, in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel.

Marlene married Roy Grady Evans, son of Carl Grady Evans and Josephine Haggerton.
