At the time of the 1900 census, John owned his farm in Colorado County, Texas, free of any mortgage. He indicated that his parents were born in Texas. In the 1910 census, John indicated that he rented his farm in Mills County, Texas. The father was shown born in the United States, the mother in Louisiana. By 1920, the family had moved to Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas. John worked as a teamster on a rice farm. His father is shown born in Texas, the mother in Louisiana. He rented his home. In the 1930 census, John's household consists of the two youngest children, married son John P. with his new family, and his 78 year old widowed mother, Mary Catlin, who indicated she was born in Louisiana. He worked as a retail merchant, grocery store. He owned his home in Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas, which is valued at $4000.

John married Agnes G. Miles, daughter of Rev John Steen Miles and Sarah F. Duke, about 1898. (Agnes G. Miles was born in Jan 1881 in Texas.)
