  General Notes:

Choteau Acantha (MT), 15 Aug 1917

With the passing of Effie Hardin Longmuir, nearly fifty years of the history of the pioneer prairie people, as she knew them from Texas to the line, has gone beyond recall.

Born and raised on a cattle ranch near Llans, she was of the west western and in her younger days was a fearless equestrienne. Though not strictly orthodox in her religious belief, she showed the real Christian spirit by waiting on the sick and helping to console her neighbors in their bereavement. Always a booster and a builder, the town of Choteau is in a great measure indebted to her in the erection of the Methodist, Catholic and Episcopal churches.

A teacher by profession, she endeared herself to the children and had the honor of being the first elected superintendent of schools, when there were only three school districts in Teton county--Choteau, Dupuyer and Willow Rounds.

After months of suffering, she hailed the grim reaper with a spartan courageousness that was consoling to the family she left behind, and with the exclamation, "this is so much better", she entered upon the journey to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns.

Mrs. Longmuir was born Oct. 29, 1867, and died at her home on Aug. 9, 1917. Funeral services were held on Friday, Rev. V.E. Hall officiating. Interment was made in Choteau cemetery.

Deceased is survived by her husband, Alexander O. Longmuir, and two daughters, Mary and Dorothy.
