STEPHENVILLE, TX - A memorial service for Charles Riggins will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church with Rev. Paul Ganther officiating.
Charles was born in Stephenville on December 31, 1923, to Edna (McCombs) and Lorenzo Riggins.
He attended Tarleton State College, as it was then known, interrupting his studies to serve in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He graduated from North Texas State Teachers College, now North Texas University, in 1950. In 1951 Charles married Tommie Ann Booker, and they had one son, David.
Active in both community affairs and local government, Riggins served on the Stephenville City Council with nine mayors for a total of 26 years, longer than any other resident.
He was an Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 39 and retained his interest in the Scouting program later as a troop leader.
He helped organize and establish the Cross Timbers Fine Arts Council and was awarded a lifetime membership for his participation, and also contributed to the work of the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member for over 60 years.
Employed by Stephenville Bank and Trust for 34 years, Charles retired in 1986.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie, and his son, David.
