  General Notes:

At the time of the 1860 census, John was a farmer in Blue Springs, Greene County, Tennessee. His 6 month old son Thomas was listed with him but not his wife. At the time of the 1870 census, he was a farmer in Midway, Greene County, Tennessee. He had real estate valued at $300 and personal assets of $400. Between 1873 and 1876 the family moved to Burnet County, Texas, where they were farming at the time of the 1880 census.

John married Martha Kinser, daughter of William Kinser and Mariah Ealy, on 14 Dec 1858 in , Greene County, Tennessee.¹ (Martha Kinser was born on 5 Feb 1843 in Tennessee,⁵ died on 17 Aug 1901 and was buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Marble Falls, Burnet County, Texas.)
