He rented his home in Carson Heights addition. At the time of the 1910 census, John was a laborer with his own jobs. He owned his home in Portland free of mortgage. In 1920 he was gardening a vegetable garden.
John married Emilie Auguste Naumann, daughter of Karl Heinrich Naumann and Eva Fredricka Schmiedgen, on 24 Sep 1882 in Winchester, Fayette County, Texas.
