Laura's parents were Dr. Henry C. Ghent, born in South Carolina, and Sarah J. Pearce, born in Georgia. (given as Mary Pearce by Laura's son on her death certificate). At the time of the 1880 census, the family lived in Belton, Bell County, Texas, where her father was a physician. By the time of the 1910 census, Laura had borne 4 children with 2 still living. She had resided in Houston, Harris County, Texas for 35 years at the time of her death. Her son, Dr. Ghent Graves, was the informant on her death certificate.

Laura married Dr Marvin Lee Graves, son of Rev George Washington Graves and Mary Priscilla Fowler, in 1893 in Belton, Bell County, Texas. (Dr Marvin Lee Graves was born on 26 Mar 1867 in Bosqueville, McLennan County, Texas,^{2 8} died on 19 Nov 1953 in Houston, Harris County, Texas ^{8 9} and was buried on 21 Nov 1953 in Forest Park Mausoleum, Houston, Harris County, Texas ⁸.). The cause of his death was encephalomalacia of brain due to arteriosclerosis.⁶
