  General Notes:

Swedes in Texas, pages 372-373:
"A. J. ANDERSON. The contribution which A. J. Anderson has made to both the spiritual and material well-being of the New Sweden community, makes a beautiful page in the "History of the Swedes in Texas In Word and Pictures."

"The story of his life so far is as follows: he was born in Barkeryd parish, Småland, in 1844. His father, Anders Nelson, a farmer, owned half of the Äng farm. His son, Anders Johan, stayed in his parents' home until he immigrated to America. At that time the children only went to school for five to ten weeks per year, in spite of which Anderson got a good Christian upbringing.

"In the company of his brother, A. F. Anderson, and eight young men and two women, he immigrated to the United States in 1867 and arrived in Manor, Texas, on August 1, 1867. Anderson worked for Mrs. Parson on her cotton plantation north of Manor for more than two years. He later worked on bridge-construction for the Houston & Texas Central Railroad with his brother, A. F. Anderson, for three years.

"In 1873 he made a short visit in his homeland and to his parents. In the same year, A.F. Anderson bought land in New Sweden, which was then called Knight's Ranch, and A. J. Anderson then bought half of his brother's land. With the exception of a few scattered houses along the creeks- Wilbarger and Brushy Creeks- the land between Manor and Circleville was one large prairie. Taylor, Hutto and Coupland did not exist. It was up to the settlers to clear and break the land. A. J. Anderson soon had his farm cultivated. The home is now, after close to fifty years, secluded behind planted shade-trees which are witnesses of past industry and planning.

"In 1882, he married Matilda Charlotta Monson. She was born in 1851 in Jersnäs parish, Småland, where her father, Mons Johanson, was a farmer. He immigrated to America and came to his brother-in-law, J. E. Rolf in Austin, Texas, in 1877. They had five children of whom two are dead. Those who are still living are: Ellen, 1887, Martin, 1889, married to Nora Estella Stromquist, and living on his father's old farm, and Esther, born in 1894.
Mrs. A.J. Anderson died on January 22, 1905 and rests with her children, Oscar Hilding and Carl Walter, in the family grave in the New Sweden cemetery.

"In 1917, Anderson retired from running the farm, and he now lives in peace and quiet in Austin, enjoying what he has assembled during his life of hard work. Anderson is one of the organizers of the Lutheran congregation in New Sweden, and with his family he belongs to that church. For twenty-seven years he faithfully served as deacon. Through his calm Christian character, he has become respected and loved, not only by the congregation, but also by all those who have come in contact with him.

"The community has honored him with responsible positions. For several years he served as a member of the district school-board. It is an even greater accomplishment that for twenty-three years, he was Chairman of the mutual fire insurance company, Svea, and led it calmly and wisely, never letting the chairmanship be brought out of balance."

His daughter Esther Anderson was the informant on his death certificate. 3
