In the 1860 census he is listed as a laborer in Leon County, Texas.

He fought in the Civil War and lost a leg. The family was notified and they went to Arkansas to get him. They put his bed on a two wheel cart and brought him home. He farmed about 100 acres 5 miles east of Cleburne (1 mile west of Buel) in Johnson County, Texas. He was always looking for a proper limb for his peg leg and carved on his next leg in his spare time. He was an early day tax collector for Johnson County, Texas.

In the 1870 census he is listed as a farmer in Johnson County, Texas. He had $240 in real estate, and $125 in personal assets. In the 1880 census he is listed as a farmer in Johnson County, Texas. A cousin Daniel E. Clowdus, born in Alabama about 1851, is listed with the family and is a farm laborer. At the time of the 1900 census, Levi has become widowed. He was in Johnson County, Texas.
