At the time of the 1900 census, Sam was a farmer, paying a mortgage on his farm in Scurry County, Texas.. By the time of the 1910 census, he owned his farm in Scurry County free of any mortgage. When Sam registered for the WWI draft he listed his occupation as stock farmer. He was self-employed. He was living in Snyder, Scurry County, Texas. He listed his wife, Martha Ellen, as his nearest relative. He continued to farm in Scurry County, Texas through the 1920 and 1930 census years.

The cause of her death was cerebrovascular accident (recurrent) due to severe cerebrovascular arteriosclerosis.10
