At the time of the 1870 census, John was a laborer in Williamson County, Texas. He had real estate valued at $5000 and personal assets of $100. His wife Agnes had real estate valued separately at $300. Sarah Wilson, 44, was part of his household. At the time of the 1880 census, he was a physisian in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. The address is noted in the margin of the census page as 355 East Rich Street.

John married Agnes Priscilla Britton, daughter of Alfred Britton and Agnes Priscilla Epperson. (Agnes Priscilla Britton was born in Feb 1849 in Texas and died in 1931 in , Burnet County, Texas.)
