At the time of the 1860 census, Alexander was newly wed to Amanda. He was farming alongside his widowed mother Sarah Smith and the rest of his siblings in Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee. His mother's real estate was valued at $17,000 with personal property of $5750. He had no real estate, but his personal assets were valued at $4695. At the time of the 1870 census, Alexander was a farmer in Newport, Cocke County, Tennessee. He had real estate valued at $2000 and personal assets of $1300. His household consisted of wife Amanda and children Samuel, Sarah A., Mary, James, and Walter. Two blacks Amanda and Martin Miller were employed as servant and laborer. At the time of the 1880 census, Alexander was living in Irish Bottom, Cocke County, Tennessee with second wife Matilda and children Alice, Mary, James, Walter, and Cora from his first marriage.

Alexander married Amanda Clark, daughter of James Clark and Penelope. (Amanda Clark was born about 1839 and died before 1880.)

Alexander next married Matilda G. Page, daughter of Rev Gabriel F. Page and Matilda. (Matilda G. Page was born on 21 Mar 1854 in , Cocke County, Tennessee, died on 26 Feb 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma and was buried in Marble Falls City Cemetery, Marble Falls, Burnet County, Texas.)
