Z. McCasland Dead
Z. L. McCasland, the 15-year old son of Mr. S. L. McCasland of Center City, died at an early hour Sunday morning in the hospital at Temple, where he was carried for treatment several days previous to that time. He suffered with an abscess on his bowels and an operation was not thought advisable, owing to the location of the trouble being in doubt. His remains were brought here on Sunday night's train and conveyed from here to Center City, where the funeral took place the next day.
To the bereaved family the Eagle offers sincere sympatyhy.
Obituary
It was with profound sadness that we received the news Sunday morning, July 31, 1910, of the death of Z McCasland. This bright and honest boy was the pride and joy of his honored father and mother, his school mates and friends. All who speak of him have a pleasant word to say of him. Raised by upright, Christian parents, his future was bright and had he lived he would have been an honorable and upright gentleman like his father. It has been my good fortune to know this family for 24 years and there is no family in Center City community that stands any better in the estimation of the people than the family of S. L. McCasland. You never hear of any misdeeds of these McCasland children and to show the respect in which this family is held, the attendance at this funeral was one of the largest gatherings I have ever seen in the Center City grave yard. I can truthfully say I saw more tearstained eyes among the young people at this grave than I ever saw at a funeral in that cemetery.
Now may the good Lord bless and protect this grief-stricken family is my prayer. From their friend, J. T. Owens
Obituary
Z. L. better known as "Z" son of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. McCasland was born May 10, 1895; departed this life July 31, 1910, being 15 years, 2 months and 21 days old. He was sick about eighteen days, during which time he suffered much, but bore his suffering manfully and without a complaint. He passed away in Temple, Texas, where he had gone for an operation. He was a favorite among the young people and his death has cast a veil of sadness over the entire neighborhood and surrounding country, where he was known. He was buried at the Center City cemetary Monday, August 1, and one of largest crowds ever seen here at a burial service attended his funeral. One or two of the scenes at the grave were the most touching this writer has ever witnessed. Before he passed away he left the evidence that he was ready to depart and live with his Lord. May it be the happy lot of every member of the family left behind to meet "Z" on the sunlit shores of the far away home of the soul, and on may each schoolmate and friend left behind stand by the secret desire and purpose of that sad day, so that they too may meet and live forever with him they loved and played. 2
