He came from a large family. There were 8 of the 9 children still living in 1900. At the time of the 1880 census, the family lived in McMullen County, Texas, where his father was a stock raiser. In 1900 the family was still in McMullen County, but his father was a merchant and Walter was working as a salesman. At the time of the 1910 census, he was a retail merchant with a grocery store. He owned his home in McMullen County, Texas, free of mortgage. Walter registered for the WWI civilian draft in McMullen County, Texas. He also registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918 in McMullen County. His occupation was stockman. At the time of the 1920 census, Walter was a stockman on a ranch in Beeville, Bee County, Texas. The family was listed with his father in law as head of household. At the time of the 1930 census, the family was back in McMullen County. Walter was a truck operator on a freight route. He owned his home valued at $1000. His death certificate showed his occupation as retired cattle rancher. (Mary Allie Miles was born on 17 Jan 1883 in Tilden, McMullen County, Texas,10 11 died on 22 Sep 1960 in Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas 11 and was buried in Tilden Cemetery, Tilden, McMullen County, Texas 11.). The cause of her death was rupture of myocardium due to myocardial infarction.7 |
