His parents were John Thomas Leftwich, born in Georgia, and Matilda Josephine Thomas, born in Arkansas. At the time of the 1900 census, the family lived in Cass County, Texas, where his father farmed. His siblings were John F., Era L., Prudie A., James A., Leether J., Lydia P., and Collie M. He first married at age 16 (about 1909). At the time of the 1910 census, he was living in Omaha, Morris County, Texas, with his wife Lula, age 21, daughter Elma Mae, born 1910, and grandmother Roda Vaughn. He was a farmer. He owned his farm free of mortgage. When Olin registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was a farm laborer in Hughes Springs, Cass County, Texas. He was single, but had one child to support. At the time of the 1920 census, Olin was widowed. He lived with his in laws, Randolph and Chrissie Motley, in Morris County, Texas, and was a farm laborer. His daughter was not listed in the same household that year. She was living with his parents. By the time of the 1930 census, Olin had remarried and had 6 more children. He was farming in Cass County, Texas. He rented his home.
