At the time of the 1910 census, the family lived in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, where his father was a janitor in a department store and his older brothers, Thaddeus and Earl worked in a woolen mill. His mother had lost 5 other children by that time. In 1920, his father was a janitor in an apartment house. James was a laborer in a saw mill. They were still in Eugene. In Apr 1930, he was a patient in the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital in Turner, Marion County, Oregon. He indicated he was 22 when first married. (The marriage to Mary Louise Noble must not have been his first.) Social Security had his last residence as Salem, Marion County, Oregon.

James married Mary Louise Noble, daughter of Samuel Brinkworth Noble and Louisa Rose Herberger, on 21 Jan 1938 in , Stevens County, Washington. (Mary Louise Noble was born on 3 Dec 1917 in , San Joaquin County, California ⁶.)
