James's father was born in Arkansas, his mother in Kentucky. At the time of the 1900 census, James was a teamster in LaGrue, Arkansas County, Arkansas. His father in law John Noble was living with him and a 70 year old pauper Caroline Hagler. At the time of the 1910 census, James was a lumbering buyer. He rented his home in LaGrue, Arkansas County, Arkansas. His household included married daughter Iva, her husband, and daughter. At the time of the 1920 census, James was farming in Lamville, Elko County, Nevada. He rented his home. His granddaughter Eva was part of the household and his 15 year old nephew Floyd Williams. At the time of the 1930 census, James and Eva were living at the Nevada School of Industry in Elko where they both worked. James was an officer.

James married Eva L. Noble, daughter of John Spencer Noble and Mary Elizabeth Nordyck, on 24 Jul 1890 in DeWitt, Arkansas County, Arkansas. (Eva L. Noble was born on 16 Dec 1869 in , Jefferson County, Iowa ¹ and died on 16 Jul 1945 in Palisade, Mesa County, Colorado.)
