At the time of the 1860 census, Nathan was a farmer in Coopers, Nash County, North Carolina. He had real estate valued at $1000 and personal assets of $744. At the time of the 1880 census, Nathan was farming in Colorado County, Texas. His household included his wife, son Thomas and his wife Mollie, and son Jack. Widowed daughter Temperance Obenhaus and her 2 sons were next to him, along with 4 farm laborers.
Nathan's parents were Wright Stephen Batchelor and Charity Tucker. (or Charity Evans as shown on the Nash County, North Carolina Vital Records Abstracts.)

In the name of God Amen I Wright Stephen Batchelor of the county of Nash & State of North Carolina being of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be God do this fifth day of August, in the year of our Lord Eighten hundred and forty five do make publish this my last will and testament in manner following that is to say:
Item. I lend to my beloved wife Charity Batchelor my tract of land whereon I now live her life time widowhood and then to my beloved Son Hardy D. Batchelor to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I lend my Negro woman Fanny to my beloved wife Charity her life time widow hood and then to my Son Haardy D. Batchelor to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I gave unto my two beloved Sons Abel Batchelor and Nathan Wright Batchelor one hundred and eighty four acres of land the tract where the said Nathan Wright Batchelor now lives to be equally divided between the two.
Item. I lend all the balance of my property to my beloved wife Charity Batchelor her life time widow hood all that are indoors and out doors.
Item. My will and desire is that all the parrishable property that I lent to my wife to be sold and equally divided between Abel Batchelor, James Batchelor, Susan Perry's children, Polly Cone's children, Nathan Wright Batchelor, Anonas Batchelor and Hardy Davis Batchelor to them and their heirs forever after her death.
Item. I do hereby and appoint my trusty Sons Abel Batchelor and Hardy Davis Batchelor as ____ to this my last will and Testament and revoking all other will heretofore made signed and sealed in the present thereof. Wright Stephen Batchelor

Will of NATHAN WRIGHT BATCHELOR (Original in NC State Archives) State of North Carolina Nash County
I Nathan Wright Batchelor of Nash County and State aforesaid being of sound mind and memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say:
First that my executor herein after mentioned shall provide for myself and wife a decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relatives and friends and pay all funeral expenses together with my just debts out of my estate.
Item 1st. I give and devise to my beloved wife the use of the ten acres of land where I now live together with the dwelling house and all out houses, this being the tract that I purchased from E.B. Finch to have and to hold during our life time then to end.
Item. I lend unto my beloved wife all my household and kitchen furniture during her natural life.
Item. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Mary J. Finch wife of E.B. Finch one half of my estate both real ad personal to have and to hold to her and her heirs in fee simple forever.
Item. I lend unto my beloved daughter Betsy Jane Ellis wife of Edwin Ellis one half of my estate both real and personal during her natural life then to her heirs in fee simple forever. The division of my two tracts of land containing sixty six and thirty six acres shall be equal in number of acres to each daughter in such a manner that Betsy Jane Ellis shall have the buildings on her half of said one hundred and two acres the buildings wherein she now lives.
Item. My will and desire is that my beloved wife will have her lifetime support out of my estate which shall not be extravagantly done.
Item. I desire that my personal property be equally divided between Mary J. Finch and Betsy Jane Ellis in any manner they may agree upon. Item. I further request of my executor that he collect all the debts owing to me and after paying all necessary expenses the surplus if any shall be equally divided between the two above described daughters.
And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my trusty Son in law E.B. Finch and my lawful executor to all intents and purposes to execute this my last will and testament, according to the true intent and meaning of the same and every part and clause thereof hereby revoking and declaring utterly void all other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.
