Lester's parents were William Veal Odom and Othela (or Ophialia) Ann Fowler. His father was born in Texas, his mother in Mississippi. At the time of the 1900 census, the family lived in Johnson County, Texas, where his father farmed. His siblings were Etna, Hubbard, and Burns. The family was listed in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas, in 1910. Lester and his brothers were farm laborers on the home farm. When Lester registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was farming for his father in law, J. A. Roe, on the Charley Sothern farm. He had a wife and a child but did not claim an exemption. They lived in Grandview, Johnson County, Texas. At the time of the 1920 census, he was a farm laborer in Hale County, Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, Lester was shown as a general farmer in Hale County, Texas. He rented his home. Social Security had his last residence as Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas. He lived 1 mile northwest of Quanah.
