At the time of the 1920 census, James was paying a mortgage to own his home in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. He was a general farmer. His wife's uncle Bud Ritchie was living with them. At the time of the 1930 census, he was a general farmer in Johnson County, Texas. Bud Ritchie was still living with them.

His death certificate showed that James was a carpenter for the car department for GC & SF Railroad. His last residence was Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas.

James married Oda Arvegia Ritchie, daughter of Tom Ritchie and Martha A. Head, about 1909. (Oda Arvegia Ritchie was born on 17 Jun 1891 in Texas,⁷ died on 8 Sep 1936 in , Johnson County, Texas ⁷ and was buried in Sand Flat Cemetery, Sand Flat, Johnson County, Texas ⁷.). The cause of her death was pulmonary tuberculosis.⁶
