His parents were shown as J. P. Major and Elizabeth Murphy on his death certificate. (His mother's mother was a Murphree, but her maiden name was Blakely.) His last residence was Vernon, Wilbarger County, Texas. He had lived there 16 years. He was a retired engineer.

Stephen married Mattie Davis Parker.
