His mother's birth place was listed as Georgia on the 1900 census.) At the time of the 1900 census, his family lived in Tarrant County, Texas, where his father farmed. His siblings were Anna and Clayton. His half-siblings were Nettie Lee, Napoleon C., and Max W (or Mose). At the time of the 1920 census, he was farming with his father in Somervell County, Texas. His half-siblings were still at home.

At the time of the 1930 census, Sam was a general farmer in Johnson County, Texas. He rented his home. His household consisted of his wife Martha and 3 sons by his first wife Hannah L. Tarver (1886-1920). They were Samuel C. 18, Pinkney R. M. 15, and Cornelius D. 10.

After Martha Angeline's death, Sam married a third time to Autie Evelyn Fulfer (1894-1971), a divorcee with several children by John Elick Phipps. Sam and all 3 wives are buried at Buel Cemetery, Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. Social Security had his last residence as Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas.
