His father Elias Rice was an early Johnson County, Texas, settler who died in the Confederate service. His mother was Susan Anne Cook.

Excerpt from "Johnson County History":

In 1859 Elias Rice and wife, Susan Cooke Rice, and four sons left the old Rice plantation in Blount County, Alabama in horse drawn wagons and headed west. They camped near Fairview and liked it so well they decided to remain here with their old neighbors from Alabama. They purchased 100 acres and built a large, comfortable double log cabin. The lumber for the floors they hauled from Jefferson, Texas. There were six children born here. David D. Rice married Mary Head, and Wm. Asburn Rice married Frances Claunch. The latter's son, E. A. Rice, became a prominent lawyer in Cleburne.

At the time of the 1900 census, Doctor D. was a farmer in Johnson County, Texas. He owned his farm free of any mortgage. At the time of the 1910 census, he was renting his farm in Denton County, Texas. He and the 2 older sons were farming. He was still a general farmer on a rented farm in 1920 and 1930 in Denton County, Texas. His grandson Daniel Dorner was living with them in both census years.

His died 4 miles northwest of Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. That may have been his home. His mailing address was a rural route outside Cleburne, Texas. He had retired from farming after 45 years in 1930. 1

Doctor married Mary Jane Head, daughter of William Newton Head and Lucy Alice Richardson, about 1886. (Mary Jane Head was born on 7 Oct 1866 in , Johnson County, Texas,2 7 9 died on 12 Jul 1953 in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas 7 9 and was buried on 13 Jul 1953 in Bethany Cemetery, Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas 8 9.). The cause of her death was pulmonary embolus secondary to previous fracture of hip.6
