  General Notes:

Gilbert's parents were Benjamin W. Chunn and Emery E. Whitten, both born in Alabama. At the time of the 1910 census, the family lived in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama, where his father farmed. His siblings were Coleman M. Novie D., Nora, Flora, Lillie, and Everett. His paternal grandmother, Martha E. Chunn, and maternal grandfather, Coleman C. Whitten, both widowed were living with the family.

When Gilbert registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was farming for his father, B. W. Chunn, in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama. He was also his nearest relative. That was also true at the time of the 1920 census. The same grandparents were still living with his family and there was a new sibling, Annie. By the time of the 1930 census, his mother had died. Gilbert was living with his father, Flora, Lillie, Annie, and grandmother Martha E. Chunn. (Note: the census line for Gilbert is marked married at age 20, but no spouse or children are listed.)
