His parents were James H. and Mattie V. Hickman, both born in Arkansas. They came to Texas from Arkansas in 1899 or early 1900. In 1910 the family lived in Alvarado, Johson County, Texas, where his father farmed. His siblings were Fairy (or Ferry), Carl, Bessie, and Deloras (or Dorthy). One other child was deceased. The family was in Johnson County at the time of the 1920 census. Bessie was not listed. At the time of the 1930 census, Spurgeon, Dora, and daughter Mildred shared a home with his parents and his sister Deloras I. and her husband Ray W. Roddy in Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. He paid $10 a month in rent. He was a truck driver for a garage. Social Security had his last residence as Alvarado, Johnson County, Texas. Listed as R. Hickman.

Spurgeon married Dora F. Head, daughter of John Jasper Head and Susan E. McClure. (Dora F. Head was born on 9 Dec 1905 in Texas ⁷ and died on 18 Nov 1985 in , Johnson County, Texas ^{6 7}.)
