His father was born in North Carolina or Georgia, his mother in Alabama. At the time of the 1900 census, he was a section foreman for the railroad. The family lived in Dallam County, Texas. Four boarders, all railroad laborers, were boarding with his family. James was a section foreman for the railroad in 1910 also. The family rented their home in Freestone County, Texas. At the time of the 1920 census, James was a foreman for Frisco railroad. He was paying a mortgage to own his home in Gunter, Grayson County, Texas. At the time of the 1930 census, he worked as a gardener at the flour mill yards in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. He rented his home for $10 a month.
