Newt's parents were Isaac Newton Fry and Narcissus Mariah Cook. When Newt registered for the WWI draft on 5 Jun 1917, he was a carpenter working for J. F. Morris in Walnut Springs, Bosque County, Texas. He was single and the sole support for his mother. He was a machinist in a machine shop. His last residence was North Richland Hills, Tarrant County, Texas. George B. Fry was the informant on his death certificate.

Newt married Anna Blakely, daughter of James Daniel Blakely and Nancy Hanna Blackburn. (Anna Blakely was born on 9 Sep 1881 in Lanham, Hamilton County, Texas,⁴ died on 14 Feb 1953 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas ⁵ and was buried on 16 Feb 1953 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas ^{2 5}.). The cause of her death was bronchial pneumonia of both lungs. She suffered from severe generalized arteriosclerosis..¹
