  General Notes:

At the time of the 1860 census, James was a lawyer in Gallatin, Daviess County, Missouri. He had real estate valued at $3000, and personal assets of $7000. Elwood Mann and R. W. Grove were listed with his household.

In Jul 1873, he opened a new bank on the corner of Tejon and Huerfano Streets, Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado. A company was incorporated to carry it on, under the name of the People's Bank with the following officers: President, James McFerran; Acting Cashier, William Lewis Brosius. McFerran was connected with several banks in Missouri. (William Lewis Brosius may have been his wife's uncle born in 1827.)

McFerran was politically active. He was nominated as Colorado Springs City Trustee in Mar 1875. At the time of the 1880 census, he was a banker in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Colorado.

James married Emily M. Lewis, daughter of William C. Lewis and Elizabeth Brosius, on 29 May 1851 in Gallatin, Daviess County, Missouri.¹ (Emily M. Lewis was born on 11 Sep 1834 in Pennsylvania ⁸.)
